Credit Card Offers

What are credit card offers?  Credit cards that are offered to you can come in a variety of different ways.  You can get credit offers in the mail that state you are prequalified for the card.  You can also search for credit offers online.  It is not enough to get the offers from credit card companies and accept them.  In fact you don’t want to accept every offer you find; more than that you don’t want to apply for multiple cards at once.  Instead you need to choose the offer from credit card companies you are certain to get.

Let’s look at credit card offers to determine what you should be looking for.  A credit card offer is going to try and entice you into submitting an application, but beware of the traps.  There can be several traps in the credit card world, which can send you into a higher debt if you are not careful.

The first thing on offers you normally see is an introductory offer for balance transfers.  This can be zero percent, a life of the balance offer, or something else with a lower interest rate for a set period of time.  These offers look great especially if you have a high balance on another card.  By entertaining the idea of a lower rate for that balance you can get it paid down faster.  However, after the introductory period is over you are back to the higher interest rate.  The cards also pay down the lowest interest rate first.  This means if you make a purchase at 13.99 percent interest and have a balance transfer of 0 percent you are paying on the balance transfer first.  The other balances are costing you a lot of money in interest.

Many of the credit offers will have a purchase introductory offer as well.  This could be zero percent for three months.  Just remember the balance transfer is paid down first before the purchase.  So you will end up paying for the purchases a lot longer with a higher interest eventually.  By looking over the terms and conditions of the credit cards you can determine how you need to use the card.

The offers may also be for rewards or charity donations.  There are plenty of options in the industry for these types of things.  Bear in mind that you want an offer for something you will use.  If you want to pay down a balance quicker from another card then the offer you seek should be a balance transfer option that is the cheapest or the longest running.  Likewise for rewards if you want discounts or money back then getting a card that offers flight miles usually isn’t the way to go.

By examining the offers thoroughly you can decide what card to apply for and make the best of it.  A lot of first time credit card holders just take the first application they receive, so be smarter and get the offer that makes sense to your lifestyle.
